Manchester City supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side record a 16th consecutive Premier League victory last weekend, before booking their place in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup by ousting Leicester City on Tuesday.
Pep Guardiola’s men swept aside Tottenham 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium last Saturday to continue their unrelenting march towards the Premier League title, with their 11-point lead remaining intact following a 17th win of the campaign, alongside neighbours Manchester United’s success at West Brom. And the Citizens took a step closer to a first trophy under Guardiola by beating Claude Puel’s Leicester on penalties in the last eight of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, with Claudio Bravo the hero after saving Riyad Mahrez’s effort in the shootout.
Consequently, there have been several buoyant City fans in the Tavern this week, and they are likely to be further encouraged by a recent report from Reuters, which details some intriguing comments from Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson regarding the future of winger Wilfried Zaha.
The 25-year-old has been in excellent form for the Eagles in the last 12 months or so, with seven goals and 11 assists helping the club stave off relegation last term, while his four goals in 12 games this time round suggests that he’ll play a key part in their survival chances this season as well.
And the Ivorian’s fine efforts for the London club has reportedly attracted the interest of Guardiola’s City, amongst others, in recent times, and Palace chief Hodgson has suggested that his prized asset could well leave in January.
He said: ‘I don’t think as a manager you can ever give guarantees on anything.
‘It’s a great credit to the club and Zaha that there are rumours circulating about so-called bigger clubs thinking about making a bid. If the day comes when one of those rumours are no longer rumours, I’ll come to terms with it and deal with it.’
And these comments are likely to provide a boost to City and boss Guardiola, who may be able to use the club’s financial power and lofty league position to lure Zaha away from Selhurst Park in January.
Landlord’s verdict: Wilfried Zaha played a pivotal part in Crystal Palace’s survival campaign last season, and he looks set to do so again this time round if the first few months of the term are anything to go by.
The 25-year-old has scored four goals in just 12 Premier League appearances for Roy Hodgson’s men, as such attracting interest from some of the biggest clubs in the lands, most notably Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
And the Citizens may have received a boost as Palace chief Hodgson has admitted that Zaha could well be sold in January, perhaps giving City an opportunity to try their hand at a bid for the Ivorian.
He wouldn’t be cheap, but given the financial power the Premier League leaders have, as well as their current status as the best team in the land, they’ll likely be confident of landing the 25-year-old in January.
