Liverpool supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours or so after seeing their side extend their unbeaten Premier League run to 13 matches with a narrow 2-1 success over Burnley on New Year’s Day.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash at Turf Moor off the back of successive victories over Swansea City and Leicester City, results that placed them fourth in the Premier League table heading into 2018. And the Reds remain well placed for another season of Champions League football as a Ragnar Klavan header in the fourth minute of added time was enough to secure a vital three points against Sean Dyche’s Clarets, who had just minutes earlier cancelled out Sadio Mane’s opener through Iceland international Johann Gudmundsson.
Subsequently, there have been many delighted Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are likely to be intrigued and possibly encouraged by recent comments from Bayern Munich manager Jupp Heynckes (via SportBild), which suggests that a deal for reported Reds target Leon Goretzka isn’t done just yet.
The 23-year-old’s future at Bundesliga outfit Schalke has been subject of speculation for a while now given that his contract is up at the end of the season, and as of yet no extension has been agreed.
As such, several top European clubs have been linked with a move for the Germany international, including Klopp’s Liverpool, yet reports recently suggested that Heynckes’ Bayern were in pole position to secure the midfielder’s signature.
However, the Bayern chief has played down that a deal is done, saying: ‘You have to wait and see.
‘If I read correctly, his manager (Jörg) Neubauer said that they have not yet decided. The Spaniards are still there in the race.’
And although Heynckes doesn’t explicitly state that Liverpool are in the chase for Goretzka, these comments are likely to come as a potentially big boost to Klopp, who could look at the midfielder as the ideal replacement for wantaway star Emre Can, who has been linked with a move to Juventus this month.
Landlord’s verdict: Leon Goretzka’s future at Schalke has been dominating gossip columns throughout the season so far, but with the January transfer window now open, the end of the saga could well be in sight.
The 23-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and as such could sign a pre-contract agreement this month with a foreign side, which is sure to be of interest to Liverpool, who are reportedly interested in the midfielder.
And manager Jurgen Klopp is likely to be boosted by recent comments from Bayern Munich boss Jupp Heynckes, who has suggested that a deal to bring Goretzka to the Bundesliga champions, reported to be done by some quarters recently, is not a done deal yet.
Thus, the Reds may still have a genuine chance of luring the 23-year-old to the Premier League this month.
