Liverpool supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side get back to winning ways in the Premier League courtesy of a 4-0 thrashing of Bournemouth on Sunday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash on the South Coast having drawn each of their previous two league encounters, but there was little doubt about the result at the Vitality Stadium as the Reds produced a scintillating attacking display to see off the Cherries. Goals from Philippe Coutinho, Dejan Lovren, Mohamed Salah, and Roberto Firmino secured a comprehensive victory for the Merseysiders, who in turn moved above Tottenham into fourth place in the Premier League table following their defeat to Manchester City the day before.
Thus, there have been delighted Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, and they are likely to be boosted by recent comments from manager Klopp at his pre-Arsenal press conference (via The Liverpool Echo), which suggests that defender Joel Matip is closing in on a return to first team action.
The 26-year-old centre-back has missed the Reds’ last four Premier League games due to a thigh problem, but prior to that had started all but one of their 14 league matches to underline his status as one of Klopp’s first choice defenders.
And the Liverpool manager has given supporters a big boost in his pre-Arsenal press conference, which suggests that the former Schalke centre-back could return to the team in the near future.
He said: ‘But Joel Matip is a positive. I’m not sure if he’s ready for Arsenal but the other games coming up I’m pretty sure. That’s it, I think.’
And although the former Cameroon international is unlikely to feature against Arsene Wenger’s Gunners on Friday, having him back for the busy festive period thereafter is likely to come as good news to our resident Liverpool fans.
Landlord’s verdict: Liverpool have somewhat improved defensively in recent times, having conceded just four goals in the nine Premier League games since their 4-1 thumping by Tottenham on October 22.
However, with games coming up thick and fast over the Christmas period, their backline is likely to be stretched, so news that centre-back Joel Matip is close to returning to first team action will probably be well received by many Liverpudlians.
The 26-year-old started all but one of their opening 14 league games to suggest that he is a first choice under Klopp, so having him back for the coming fixtures is likely to be a big boost to the Reds boss ahead of crucial run of games in the next few weeks.
