Newcastle United and Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern have been in fine voice in the last few weeks as their respective sides embark on a solid run of form.
The Magpies lost their opening two Premier League games of the campaign against Spurs and Huddersfield Town, but have since then beaten West Ham, Swansea City, and Stoke City to propel them up to fourth in the division.
And that means that they are ahead of Mauricio Pochettino’s men, who sit a place and a point adrift of the North East giants having won just two of their opening five league matches, neither of which have come at Wembley.
However, they reached the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday to delight our resident Tottenham supporters, and both sets of fans are likely to be pleased with a recent report from ESPN, which includes quotes made by Besiktas striker Cenk Tosun, a reported target of the Premier League duo.
The 26-year-old moved to the Turkish giants back in 2014 and has since then proven his goal-scoring credentials with 54 goals in 124 games for the club, including 20 in the Super Lig last term in their run to a second successive domestic league title.
And, unsurprisingly, his fine form in front of goal reportedly attracted the interest of Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle and Pochettino’s Spurs, but it was Crystal Palace who firmed up their interest late in the window with a reported bid for Tosun.
But the man himself has given his English suitors a boost by conveying his desire to play in England, saying: ‘I am really happy at Besiktas but like Arda Turan and Nuri Sahin I want to be an ambassador for Turkey abroad.
‘I am keen on playing in England. I am really pleased with the interest being shown from the Premier League sides mentioned.
‘It really is an honour and we will discuss my future with the club president at the end of the season.’
These comments are sure to intrigue both Benitez and Pochettino, and if the 26-year-old continues his stunning goal-scoring form over the course of the current campaign, he’s unlikely to be short of suitors come the summer.
Landlord’s verdict: It was Crystal Palace who seized the initiative in pursuit of Cenk Tosun over the summer, but left their bid too late to lure him away from Besiktas.
But that interest, as well as reported interest from Newcastle United and Tottenham, is something the 26-year-old is aware of, as the man himself has openly admitted that he’d like to move to England at some stage in a bid to follow previous Turkish stars in moving abroad.
And this desire to play in the Premier League is a major boost to the aforementioned Premier League sides, who are likely to be interested next summer if Tosun continues to regularly score goals for Besiktas this term.
