Southampton supporters have been relatively quiet in the Transfer Tavern during the international break such has been their side’s sluggish start to the season.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s men have won just two of their opening seven Premier League matches and thus sit 12th in the table, with defeat away at Stoke City last time out their third already this term, all of which coming in their last four matches.
Thus, the South Coast outfit will be hoping to get back to winning ways against Newcastle United on Sunday, but there may some promising news on the horizon for our resident Saints fans if a recent report from The Daily Mirror is anything to go by.
And that’s because they report that Pellegrino’s side, alongside several other Premier League and Championship clubs, are keeping tabs on Manchester United youngster Dean Henderson.
The 20-year-old goalkeeper came up through the ranks at Old Trafford but has yet to make a senior appearance for the Red Devils, instead he has enjoyed loan spells at Stockport County and Grimsby Town in recent seasons.
However, this term has so far been his most impressive with ten League One appearances for Shrewsbury Town, in which time he has kept five clean sheets and conceded just six goals to help Paul Hurst’s side to the top of the table.
And it appears that his fine form between the sticks at New Meadow, alongside the expiration of his United contract in the summer, has attracted the interest of many sides around the continent, with Southampton one of 14 teams reportedly interested in the Englishman’s services.
Arsenal, Chelsea, and Tottenham are also thought to be monitoring Henderson, so were he not to sign a new deal with United, he’d certainly have plenty of options for his next career move.
But whether he chooses Southampton very much remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: Dean Henderson has been making great strides in the last few months, which began with helping England win the Under-20 World Cup during the summer.
And his current loan spell with League One leaders Shrewsbury Town, with whom he has kept five clean sheets in ten league games, has opened the eyes of several clubs around Europe, including Mauricio Pellegrino’s Southampton.
The Saints have a habit of producing quality players that go on to become huge stars, so making the move south could be exactly what Henderson is after should he decide against renewing his Manchester United deal at the end of the season.
