Potentially encouraging reports emerge for suffering Everton fans

Everton supporters in the Transfer Tavern were left bemoaning another poor performance from their side over the weekend in the Toffees’ 1-1 draw at Brighton, a result which does little to ease the pressure on under-fire manager Ronald Koeman.

The Merseyside outfit went into their clash with the Seagulls on Sunday having won just two of their opening seven league games, and they looked on course to suffer a fourth league defeat of the campaign when Anthony Knockaert gave Chris Hughton’s side the lead eight minutes from time. However, Koeman’s men responded and secured a point in the final minute when Wayne Rooney slotted home a spot-kick following Bruno’s foul on Dominic Calvert-Lewin, but the result leaves Everton 16th in the Premier League table and just two points clear of the bottom three.

Thus, several of our resident Evertonians remain unconvinced about Koeman’s ability to turn things around at Goodison Park, yet they may well be encouraged by a recent report from The Daily Mail, which suggests that the Toffees are one side in the race for Wolves defender Ruben Vinagre.

The 18-year-old made the move to Molineux on loan at the start of the season from French giants Monaco, and has since gone to appear six times in the Championship for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, in which he has helped them to three clean sheets and four victories.

And given he has excelled at both left-back and wing-back during his time at the Midlands club, Vinagre has reportedly attracted interest from Koeman’s Everton, with Arsenal and Manchester City having already kept tabs in recent years.

Much has been made of the Toffees’ ageing backline this season, yet were they to land Vinagre ahead of their Premier League rivals, they would go some way to addressing those concerns.

Landlord’s verdict: Ruben Vinagre was one of several highly-rated individuals that made the move to Wolves during the summer, and he’s one that has proven his worth to the Championship leaders so far.

In his six appearances for the club they have won four and kept three clean sheets, while he also netted against Burton a few weeks ago from the wing-back position to underline his capabilities as a modern-day full-back.

And Ronald Koeman’s Everton are reportedly interested in the young defender, as they themselves seek defensive reinforcements having failed to keep a clean sheet in the Premier League since the opening day of the season.

And with Leighton Baines 32, Ashley Williams 33, and Phil Jagielka 35, Everton’s backline is certainly ageing and will need addressing in the coming transfer windows, thus a move for Vinagre could be exactly what they need.
