Aston Villa supporters were in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern over the weekend after seeing their side beat Fulham 2-1 at Villa Park, a victory which sent the Midlands giants into the Championship play-off places.
Steve Bruce’s men went into their clash with the Cottagers off the back of a 2-0 defeat at leaders Wolves last time out, but they bounced back admirably with their sixth league win of the campaign, and third in a row at Villa Park. Former Chelsea defender John Terry gave them the lead midway through the first half, and although Stefan Johansen equalised on the stroke of half time for Slavisa Jokanovic’s men, the Villans retook the lead four minutes into the second period through forward Albert Adomah.
And that win delighted several of our resident Villa supporters, many of whom are optimistic about a promotion push this season, and they are also likely to be intrigued by a recent report in The Daily Express, which includes some interesting quotes from manager Bruce regarding goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.
The 24-year-old made the temporary move to Villa Park back in the summer from Premier League giants Manchester United, and he has since nailed down the number one spot at the Midlands club with five clean sheets in 13 Championship appearances, in which time he has conceded just 13 goals.
And former United defender Bruce has made clear his intentions of signing the Englishman permanently in January, saying: ‘We will do everything in our power to get him here permanently.
‘He is going to find it difficult at United to break through because of what they have got so we are hopeful.’
And these comments are sure to delight many of those Villa fans lining up at the bar, as Johnstone has certainly proven his worth to the second tier side this term, and would be an excellent permanent addition to the squad in the New Year were they to agree a deal with the Red Devils.
But whether they can do that very much remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: It looked for all the world that Aston Villa were set for another season of frustration in the Championship, having managed just one win from their opening seven games.
However, Steve Bruce’s men have been excellent in recent times, and some of that can be pinned down to the form of goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, who has kept five clean sheets in 13 league appearances since making a temporary move from Manchester United.
And Bruce is seeking to exploit United’s extreme depth in the goalkeeping department by going after a permanent deal for Johnstone in January – a move which, on the surface, would surely be in the best interests of the 24-year-old, who simply isn’t going to dispose David de Gea at Old Trafford.
And it would also be a great move for Villa as well as they seek a return to the Premier League.
