Manchester City supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern this season given their side’s incredible start to the campaign, which got even better on Tuesday night with a narrow 1-0 win over Feyenoord in their penultimate Champions League group stage clash.
Pep Guardiola’s men were tipped by many to go on and win the Premier League title this term, and they have underlined their favourite’s tag by winning 11 of their opening 12 matches to open up an eight-point lead over neighbours Manchester United at the summit. And the Citizens made it five victories out of five in the Champions League as well as a Raheem Sterling strike two minutes from time was enough to seal a 1-0 success over Dutch giants Feyenoord on Tuesday night, thus clinching top spot in Group F.
Consequently, there have been many delighted City fans in the Tavern throughout the campaign, although they are unlikely to be overly cheerful with regard to a recent report from The Sun, which outlines some intriguing and potentially frustrating information regarding the future of reported target Joshua Kimmich.
The 22-year-old currently plays his trade at German champions Bayern Munich and has done so since 2015, in which time he has played 92 games for the club, scoring 12 goals and laying on 13 assists in the process.
And his excellent form for Jupp Heynckes’ side, with the Germany international having scored three goals and laying on nine assists so far this term, has reportedly attracted the attention of former Bayern boss Guardiola, who is seeking to reunite with the versatile star at the Etihad Stadium.
However, City may well have suffered a huge blow in their pursuit of Kimmich, as reports suggest that he is in discussions with Bayern about signing a new deal at the club, as they seek to strengthen their hand over the coming windows should other European heavyweights come knocking.
Thus, Guardiola looks to have a huge battle on his hands to lure the 22-year-old to the Premier League in the near future.
Landlord’s verdict: Joshua Kimmich was given his Bayern Munich opportunity by Pep Guardiola when he was in charge at the Allianz Arena, and the Germany international has since come on in leaps and bounds.
From starting out as a central midfielder, the 22-year-old has also excelled at centre-back and more recently at right-back, and it’s form which has reportedly attracted the attention of Guardiola, as well as La Liga leaders Barcelona.
Yet both look set for disappointment as reports suggest that Kimmich is in discussions with Bayern over new deal at the club, which is sure to come as a blow to City and boss Guardiola, who would have been on the lookout for further reinforcements to strengthen their Premier League and Champions League title bids.
And although penning a new deal wouldn’t completely rule out a move to the Etihad Stadium, it would make it extremely difficult for City to prize the talented star away from the Bundesliga champions.
