Liverpool supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern this weekend after seeing their side ease past struggling West Ham 4-1 at the London Stadium, a result which moved the Merseyside giants up to fifth place in the Premier League table.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the Hammers off the back of successive 3-0 wins over Huddersfield Town and Maribor, and they completed a fine week with another impressive attacking performance at the London Stadium. Mohamed Salah and Joel Matip netted in the first half to open up a two-goal cushion, and although Manuel Lanzini got one back for the hosts ten minutes into the second period, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain restored their two-goal advantage almost immediately before Salah scored his second and the Reds’ fourth with quarter of an hour to play.
Thus, several of our resident Liverpool fans were delighted with their side’s effort and application on Saturday night, and they are likely to be further encouraged by a recent report from Rai 2 (via CalcioMercato), which includes some potentially significant information regarding the future of midfielder Emre Can.
The 23-year-old made the move to Anfield back in 2014 and has since become an important member of Klopp’s squad, having made 144 appearances for the Merseyside outfit of which 32 came in their run to fourth place in the Premier League last term.
And with 15 appearances in all competitions this time round, including nine in the league and four in the group stages of the Champions League, Can is clearly proving his worth to Liverpool, yet his future at the club remains unclear as he has yet to pen an extension to his current deal, which expires in the summer. And that has led to speculation that the Germany international could be leaving the club in the coming transfer windows, with Serie A giants Juventus one side reportedly linked with the midfielder.
However, director Beppe Marotta has given Liverpool fans some encouragement by stating their his side won’t be doing any business in January, saying: ‘We will not sign anybody in January.’
These comments are sure to reassure and perhaps hearten our resident Liverpool supporters, many of whom have recognised the improvements Can has made during his time at the club to now become a key first team player.
Landlord’s verdict: Emre Can didn’t make a particularly fast start to life in English football, but he has certainly proven his worth to Liverpool and manager Jurgen Klopp in the last 12 months or so.
The 23-year-old missed just six Premier League matches last season in the Reds’ run to fourth place in the division, and with 15 appearances already this term, including starts in all four of their Champions League games, the Germany international remains a key part of Klopp’s plans at Anfield.
However, Can has yet to sign a new deal at the club and as such speculation has been building about his future, yet one side linked with the midfielder, namely Juventus, are not in the market for players in January according to director Beppe Marotta.
And that will surely come as good news to Liverpool fans up and down the country, although it doesn’t detract from the wider issue of whether Can will indeed pen a new contract at Anfield.
