Tottenham supporters have been somewhat downbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side miss out on the chance to go above Liverpool in the Premier League table after only managing a 1-1 draw with struggling Southampton.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their clash on the South Coast on Sunday knowing that victory over the Argentine’s former employers would move them above Jurgen Klopp’s side into fourth place in the division, but they weren’t able to clinch all three points. Davinson Sanchez’s own goal gave the Saints a 15th minute lead, and although Harry Kane equalised just three minutes later, Spurs weren’t able to find that all important winner, and as such remain fifth in the Premier League table.
Thus, there have been some frustrated Spurs fans in the Tavern in recent times, yet their mood may be improved by a recent report from The Daily Mirror, which suggests that defender Toby Alderweireld could return to action against Manchester United on Wednesday.
The 28-year-old made the move to the North London outfit back in 2015 after a decent loan spell at Southampton the year previous, and he has since gone on to become one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League, helping Spurs to a third place finish in 2016 and to second place last season.
However, the Belgium international has not featured in Pochettino’s team since hobbling off in their magnificent win over Real Madrid back in November, thus missing each of their last 14 league matches.
And while Alderweireld is unlikely to feature against Newport County in the FA Cup on Sunday, recent reports suggest that he could be in contention for the visit of Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United on Wednesday.
And this news is sure to come as a huge boost to manager Pochettino and indeed the club’s supporters, who will be well aware of the challenge posed by the Red Devils on Wednesday.
Landlord’s verdict: Toby Alderweireld has missed each of Tottenham’s last 14 Premier League games due to injury, yet could well return for their next one against Manchester United on Wednesday.
And that’s because recent reports suggest that the 28-year-old is closing in on a return to action, two months on from injuring his hamstring in Spurs’ outstanding Champions League win over Real Madrid at Wembley.
And with Jose Mourinho’s United having won each of their last three league games, Mauricio Pochettino’s side will have to be at their best on Wednesday night, so potentially having one of their best players back from injury is likely to come as huge boost to the manager, and indeed the club’s supporters.
