Potentially huge boost for Guardiola in pursuit of reported Man City target

Manchester City supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing their side breeze past Championship promotion contenders Cardiff City 2-0 in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola’s men got the better of fellow top-flight outfit Burnley in round three to book themselves a date with Neil Warnock’s Bluebirds, the next team tasked with trying to stop the sensational Citizens. Yet the Premier League leaders eased to victory in South Wales on Sunday as first half goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling sealed a comfortable 2-0 win for the visitors, thus keeping their quadruple hopes alive heading into February.

Subsequently, there have been many delighted City fans in the Tavern in recent times, and they are likely to be further intrigued and encouraged by a recent report from Lancenet (via Sky Sports), which details a huge boost in their quest for reported target Fabinho.

The 24-year-old midfielder currently plays his trade at Ligue 1 champions Monaco and has done so permanently since 2015, having spent the preceding two years on loan at the Stade Louis II to good effect.

And with 217 appearances for Leonardo Jardim’s side, including 56 in their run to the domestic title and the last four of the Champions League last term, the Brazil international has certainly proven his worth to the club, and indeed attracted interest from the Premier League with City thought to be keeping tabs on the midfielder.

And Guardiola’s side may well have received a huge boost as Fabinho has seemingly plunged his future at Monaco into doubt, saying: ‘If a move to a new league or a club with a bigger structure and bigger expectations, I would be interested.

‘My time with Monaco was good, but I feel my time here is coming to an end.’

And these comments are surely going to intrigue the Premier League leaders, who may see the midfielder as the perfect long-term replacement for compatriot Fernandinho in the years to come.

Landlord’s verdict: Manchester City remain on course for the quadruple after beating Cardiff City in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday, although a few more reinforcements may be needed to enhance those chances even further.

And the Citizens may have received a huge boost in pursuit of reported target Fabinho, as the man himself has suggested that his time at Monaco is ‘coming to an end’, what with the 24-year-old having helped the club to the Ligue 1 title last term.

And with City, as well as neighbours Manchester United, reportedly interested in the midfielder, they could well lure the Brazil international away from the Stade Louis II, but whether they are able to do so in the final few days of this transfer window remains to be seen.
