Liverpool supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern in recent days after seeing their side ease past West Ham 4-1 at the London Stadium on Saturday, thus securing their third victory in the space of seven days.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their Premier League clash with the struggling Hammers off the back of beating Huddersfield Town and Maribor, and first half strikes from in-form Mohamed Salah and Joel Matip set them on their way to another three points. Manuel Lanzini did pull one back for the home side ten minutes after the break to give them hope, but that soon evaporated when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain made it 3-1 less than a minute later, before Salah bagged his second and Liverpool’s fourth with quarter of an hour to play to seal the rout.
Thus, there have been many happy Liverpudlians in the Tavern this week, and they may be about to get even chirpier as a recent report from Diario Gol (via The Daily Express) suggests that former Red Javier Mascherano could be in line for a surprise return to Anfield.
The 33-year-old currently plays his trade at Barcelona and has done since leaving Liverpool back in 2010, in which time he has helped the Spanish giants win four La Liga titles, four Copa del Reys, and two Champions League crowns.
This all came after a three-year stint at Anfield in which the Argentina international made 139 appearances and scored two goals, although he was unable to win a trophy during his time on Merseyside.
But he may well make a stunning return to Liverpool in the near future, as reports suggest that Barca teammate Lionel Messi reckons that a move back to Anfield could be in the offing for his compatriot, what with his contract up in the summer of 2019.
And this could be good news for our resident Reds supporters, especially as the 33-year-old has gone on to become an excellent centre-back during his spell at the Nou Camp.
Landlord’s verdict: Much has been made about Liverpool’s defensive woes in the last 12 months or so, and there aren’t many signs that they are getting better either having conceded 17 goals already in the Premier League this season.
However, they have been recently linked with a move for one of the most reliable and dependable centre-backs in European football, namely Barcelona’s Javier Mascherano, who teammate and compatriot Lionel Messi reportedly thinks could make a move back to Anfield having left the club in 2010.
And with his contract up in 2019, it’s plausible that the 33-year-old is contemplating his future, but at that age and arguably past his best in terms of performance levels, the Reds may be wary of bringing him back to Merseyside.
Nonetheless, it could certainly give Klopp a huge boost in pursuit of defensive reinforcements in his quest to make Liverpool title contenders once again.
