Liverpool supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating their side’s return to Premier League action against Southampton at the weekend after seeing the Reds win all three of their matches prior to the international break.
Jurgen Klopp’s men eased past Huddersfield Town 3-0 at Anfield before comprehensively beating Maribor by the same scoreline in the Champions League a few days later, thus giving them plenty of confidence ahead of their trip to West Ham. And the Merseyside giants made it three victories in the space of seven days as a brace from in-form Mohamed Salah as well as goals from Joel Matip and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain sealed a comfortable 4-1 success for Klopp’s men, who in turn moved up to fifth place in the Premier League table at the expense of Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal.
Thus, there have been plenty of delighted Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, and they are about to get a whole lot chirpier if a recent report from The Daily Mirror is anything to go by, as they report that the Reds are lining up a move for Monaco’s Thomas Lemar, and may not have to battle with Arsenal for his signature.
The 22-year-old made the move to the Ligue 1 giants back in 2015 and has since gone from strength to strength with 20 goals and 25 assists in 103 games for the club, nine goals and 11 assists of which came last term in helping Leonardo Jardim’s side to the French title.
As such, the France international was heavily linked with a move away over the summer, with Arsenal reportedly in the running, only for the forward to remain at the Stade Louis II amid much change at the club.
Yet reports suggest that the Gunners are set to end their interest in Lemar, which could potentially be a huge boost to Klopp’s Liverpool as they are one side still thought to be in the running for the 22-year-old, alongside Spanish giants Barcelona.
And with Monaco reportedly expected to cash in on the Frenchman in the summer, it’s a deal that the Reds could certainly strike up at the end of the season.
Landlord’s verdict: Thomas Lemar was one of many heroes for Monaco last season in their charge to the Ligue 1 title, as well as their run to the semi-finals of the Champions League.
The France international bagged nine goals and laid on 11 assists in 34 league games for Leonardo Jardim’s men, and such was the mass exodus at the Stade Louis II during the summer, the 22-year-old was another expected to leave.
However, he didn’t despite reported interest from Arsenal, but the Gunners have now pulled out the race, thus leaving Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool and Spanish giants Barcelona in prime position to try and land Lemar at the end of the season.
And with the Reds seeking that marquee signing to try and propel them into Premier League title contention over the coming years, it’s a deal they have to seek to get done.
