West Ham supporters have been significantly more upbeat in the Transfer Tavern in recent times after seeing their side pick up four points from two games against Chelsea and Arsenal in the last few days, albeit they remain inside the Premier League’s bottom three.
Former Everton and Manchester United manager David Moyes was drafted in by the Hammers hierarchy back in November following the sacking of Slaven Bilic, yet had to wait until his sixth game in charge to get his first win as boss, which came courtesy of a 1-0 success over champions Chelsea on Saturday. And the East London outfit produced another solid display to hold Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal to a 0-0 draw at the London Stadium on Wednesday night, and although it wasn’t enough to move them out of the bottom three, it did move them level on points with 17th place West Brom.
Consequently, there are a few more optimistic Hammers fans in the Tavern at the moment, several of whom are likely to be interested in recent comments from reported target Jack Wilshere regarding his future at Arsenal (via Football.London).
The 25-year-old’s career has been blighted by injury in recent years to the point that he had to go on loan to fellow top-flight outfit Bournemouth last term for regular football, but he has shown signs of his best form this time round for the Gunners, despite only playing 11 times for Wenger’s side.
However, the midfielder did make his first Premier League start of the campaign at the London Stadium on Wednesday night, although the man himself has confirmed that he is yet to hear anything about a new contract at the North London club.
He said: ‘No, there’s no update on the contract – we’re in the same position as we were two weeks ago. There’s not really a date in the diary.’
And with his current deal set to expire in the summer, Moyes’ West Ham, who have been linked with a move for the England international in recent times, could well sense an opportunity to land the 25-year-old in the January window.
Landlord’s verdict: Jack Wilshere’s injury problems have been well documented in recent years, yet he has shown glimpses of promise this term as he slowly but surely works his way back into Arsene Wenger’s reckoning.
The 25-year-old started his first Premier League game of the campaign on Wednesday in their 0-0 draw with West Ham, and it is the Hammers who are likely to be intrigued by Wilshere’s recent admission that he is no closer to penning a new deal at the Emirates Stadium.
David Moyes’ side have repeatedly been linked with a move for the Englishman in recent times in a bid to strengthen their squad, and they may sense a chance to throw their hat into the ring given that his Arsenal future is far from certain.
