Southampton supporters were in much higher spirits in the Transfer Tavern over the weekend after seeing their side end a run of no win in nine matches with a narrow 1-0 success over Championship side Fulham in the third round of the FA Cup.
Manager Mauricio Pellegrino was under increasing pressure to turn things around at the South Coast after winning just four of their opening 22 Premier League games, form which sees them sit just a place above the bottom three. However, there was some respite for the former Alaves boss as James Ward-Prowse’s effort midway through the first half saw the Saints come through a tricky cup tie at Craven Cottage, in turn securing their first victory since the end of November, at the same time booking their spot in round four.
Subsequently, there have been more upbeat Southampton fans in the Tavern in the last few days, several of whom are likely to be intrigued and perhaps encouraged by a promising recent report from Calcio Mercato, which details a potentially huge boost in their quest to sign Arsenal’s Theo Walcott.
The 28-year-old left St Mary’s for North London back in 2006 and has since scored 108 goals in 398 appearances for Arsene Wenger’s team, four of which coming in just 15 games for the Gunners this time round.
But with just 49 minutes of Premier League action to show for his efforts this term, the England star’s future at the Emirates Stadium has been subject of speculation, with Southampton one side reportedly keen on ending his recent Arsenal misery.
And recent reports detail a potentially huge boost for Pellegrino in his pursuit of attacking reinforcements, as although Italian outfit AC Milan have reportedly been offered Walcott, they are not keen on landing the player in the January transfer window.
Thus, with one big side seemingly out of the running, the chances of a return to St Mary’s for Walcott appears to be getting better by the day.
Landlord’s verdict: It was only last season in which Theo Walcott bagged 19 goals for Arsenal to help them to fifth place in the Premier League and another FA Cup crown, but he’s dramatically fallen down the pecking order this season.
The England star has managed just 49 minutes of Premier League action so far to throw his future at the club into doubt, especially with a World Cup to come in the summer.
Southampton are one club reportedly keen on the 28-year-old, and they may have received a boost as reports detail that AC Milan have turned down the chance to land Walcott this month, having been ‘offered’ the forward.
And although wages could be an issue for the Saints, one big club out of the running suggests that a Walcott reunion could well take place this month.
