Potentially huge boost for Tottenham as promising news emerges

Tottenham supporters have been in pretty good voice in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side ease past out-of-form Everton 4-0 in their last Premier League outing, thus moving them to within three points of the top four.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their clash with the Toffees off the back of breezing past AFC Wimbledon 3-0 in the third round of the FA Cup, alongside a run of three wins in four league matches. And the North London outfit continued their fine form as a brace from Harry Kane as well as strikes from Son Heung-min and Christian Eriksen secured a comprehensive victory for Pochettino’s side, thus setting them up perfectly for their trip to Southampton on Sunday.

Consequently, there have been many buoyant Spurs fans in the Tavern in recent times, and they are likely to be further encouraged by recent comments from Pochettino in his pre-Saints press conference (via Ben Dinnery on Twitter), which suggests that defender Toby Alderweireld could return from injury earlier than expected.

The 28-year-old hasn’t featured for Tottenham since injuring his hamstring in their 3-1 win over Real Madrid in the Champions League back in November, thus missing their final two group games as well as their last 13 Premier League matches.

However, Pochettino confirmed in his pre-Southampton press conference that there is a ‘chance’ that the Belgium international could return to the team earlier than expected, with next weekend’s fourth round FA Cup clash at Newport County a possible return date.

And, while Alderweireld won’t feature in their trip to St Mary’s on Sunday, news that his return could be much earlier than expected is sure to come as a huge boost to Pochettino, and indeed the Spurs faithful.

Landlord’s verdict: Toby Alderweireld has been one of the outstanding centre-backs in the Premier League in the last few years, although he has suffered with niggling injury problems in that time.

And the 28-year-old has been restricted to a spell on the sidelines this term as well having not featured in any of Tottenham’s last 13 Premier League games, yet recent comments from manager Mauricio Pochettino are likely to fill our resident Spurs fans with much confidence, as the defender could return against Newport County next weekend.

And given that Alderweireld was likely to remain on the sidelines well into February, this update is sure to come as a big boost to Pochettino, as his side continue their march towards another top four finish, and perhaps some silverware come the end of the season.
