Newcastle United supporters were drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern over the weekend after seeing the North East giants lose 4-1 at Manchester United in the Premier League, although their mood has somewhat improved following recent news of a takeover bid.
Rafa Benitez’s side went into their clash with the Red Devils off the back of successive league defeats, yet made a great start at Old Trafford as Dwight Gayle gave them a 14th minute lead. However, that only seemed to spur the home side on even more as goals from Anthony Martial, Chris Smalling, Paul Pogba, and Romelu Lukaku secured a comprehensive 4-1 victory for Jose Mourinho’s men, in turn inflicting a sixth Premier League loss of the campaign on Newcastle, and indeed their third in a row.
Consequently, there have been many frustrated Magpies supporters in the Tavern recently, albeit the recent takeover news has somewhat improved their mood, and they are also likely to be intrigued by a recent report from The Shields Gazette, which includes some key comments from Toon striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.
The Serbia international made the move to St James’ Park back in 2015 and has since made 69 appearances for the club, in which time he has scored 17 goals and laid on ten assists.
However, the 23-year-old has yet to start a Premier League game for Benitez’s side so far this term and only has three substitute appearances to his name, thus throwing his future at the club into doubt what with there a World Cup in Russia at the end of the season.
And Mitrovic has addressed his future and indeed World Cup plans, saying: ‘I’m patient, but we will see. My patience is almost to the end, so we will see. I want to play. I want to be on the pitch. I’m patient, but we will see.
‘If you want to do something there [the World Cup], you have to be ready. If I want to be ready, I have to play games and to be on the pitch scoring goals.’
These comments are sure to intrigue our resident Magpies fans, many of whom have taken to Mitrovic but likely know that his time in the North East could well be at an end come the New Year.
Landlord’s verdict: Joselu’s arrival at Newcastle during the summer did little for Aleksandar Mitrovic’s first team chances, with the Serbia international managing just 49 minutes of Premier League football so far this season.
And although the 23-year-old admits that he is still patient for his opportunity, there could be some key developments to come as he acknowledges that with a World Cup around the corner, he has to be playing regularly at club level to both make the Serbia squad, and indeed make a difference in Russia.
And based on what we’ve seen so far this season, that doesn’t look like happening at St James’ Park.
Newcastle fans… what do you make of the news? Let us know!
