Potentially promising Everton reports emerge despite torrid start to season

Everton supporters have been expressing their frustration in the Transfer Tavern in recent weeks after seeing their side slump to four successive defeats.

Ronald Koeman’s men opened the Premier League season with a 1-0 win over Stoke but have since then failed to win their succeeding four league games, drawing at Manchester City before losing against Chelsea, Tottenham, and Manchester United.

Europa League disappointment at Atalanta last week hasn’t helped the mood among our resident Toffees fans, although a recent report from Record (via talkSPORT) may do just that.

And that’s because they suggest that the Merseyside outfit are monitoring the progress of summer target Raul Jimenez, who is currently on the books at Portuguese giants Benfica.

The 26-year-old moved to the Estadio da Luz back in 2015 following a short stint at Atletico Madrid, and has since gone from strength to strength with 24 goals in 84 games for the club, 12 of which have come in the Primeira Liga.

However, the Mexico international has failed to start a league game this time round and was subject of reported interest from the Toffees and West Ham during the summer, and recent reports suggest that the former are maintaining their interest ahead of January.

Koeman’s men have managed just two goals in their opening five Premier League matches to underpin their striking issues, a department which would certainly be bolstered by Jimenez’s arrival were he to move to Everton in the New Year.

Landlord’s verdict: For all the money Everton spent during the summer, the sale of Romelu Lukaku and subsequent inability to replace him has left manager Ronald Koeman very short in the striking department.

So news of their reported interest in Benfica forward Raul Jimenez is hardly a surprise, not least because they were reportedly keeping tabs on him over the summer, but ultimately couldn’t get a deal done.

The 26-year-old has struggled for regular football in recent times but has still managed 24 goals for the Portuguese club since moving there in 2015, yet with Everton circling and West Ham previously interested, it remains to be seen how much longer he’s playing his football at the Estadio da Luz.
