Potentially promising January reports emerge for Celtic fans

Celtic supporters weren’t quite as loud as normal in the Transfer Tavern over the weekend following their side’s draw with Hibernian.

Brendan Rodgers’ men went into their clash with Neil Lennon’s side on Saturday off the back of victories over Rangers and Anderlecht, but they could only muster a 2-2 draw with a brace from Callum McGregor cancelling out John McGinn’s double.

Nonetheless, they remain top of the Scottish Premiership table, albeit on goal difference ahead of Aberdeen, and there might be some more good news on the way if a recent report from The Daily Record is anything to go by.

And that’s because they report that the Scottish giants could be in for a sizable amount of money in January should ex-Bhoy Virgil van Dijk make the move to Liverpool.

The 26-year-old was heavily linked with a move away from Southampton during the summer only for no deal to materialise, yet the Netherlands international made it clear yesterday that a move to Anfield remains firmly on his mind, and may well happen in the New Year.

And reports suggest that Celtic have a 10% sell-on clause in van Dijk’s contract, and given that figures of around £60 million have been banded around for the defender, Rodgers’ side could be in for a hefty sum of money.

Van Dijk left Celtic Park for £13 million back in 2015, and it’s unlikely that any of our resident Bhoys supporters would have expected the centre-back to fetch as much as is being speculated upon.

Landlord’s verdict: Virgil van Dijk moved to Southampton from Celtic two years ago for £13 million, but included a sell-on clause in his contract in case the Dutchman continued his meteoric rise, and moved on again for even more money.

And that decision looks set to be a masterstroke given that the 26-year-old is still hopeful of moving to Liverpool in January, in a deal which could be worth in excess of £60 million.

Liverpool’s dire need for defensive reinforcements and Southampton’s reluctance to sell combines to create brilliant news for Brendan Rodgers and Celtic, as they’ll be due a decent sum of money to reinvest in their own squad should a deal for van Dijk go through.
