Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern were reasonably satisfied with their side’s display in their 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Sunday.
The North East giants were beaten 1-0 by Brighton last weekend to see their run of three successive wins come to an end, but they responded impressively to deservedly take a point from their meeting with Jurgen Klopp’s Reds.
Philippe Coutinho gave the visitors the lead after 29 minutes only for Joselu to equalise seven minutes later, and there may be further encouragement for our resident Newcastle supporters if a recent report from L’Equipe (via talkSPORT) is anything to go by.
And that’s because Saint Etienne forward Jonathan Bamba, a reported target of the Premier League side over the summer, is stalling on signing a new deal at the Ligue 1 club.
The 21-year-old came up through the youth ranks at the French outfit and has since gone on to make 22 first team appearances for the senior side, in which time he has scored five goals and laid on two assists.
And this season has seen him go from strength to strength with four goals in just eight league matches for Saint Etienne, helping them to four wins and thus a lofty seventh place in the French top-flight.
And the France Under-21 international reportedly attracted the interest of Newcastle during the summer, only for no move to materialise, although the French side are seeking to agree a new contract with Bamba given his current one expires in the summer.
And the 21-year-old’s reported snubbing of their advances is sure to give Benitez and the Magpies a huge boost in their quest to land the French sensation in the near future.
Landlord’s verdict: Newcastle United struggled to get key targets to the club during the summer, with manager Rafa Benitez conveying his frustration throughout much of the close season.
And it’s plausible that one of those that got away was Saint Etienne youngster Jonathan Bamba, who has since continued to prove his worth with four goals in eight Ligue 1 matches – only seven players have scored more at this stage of the campaign.
Yet his apparent refusal to sign a new deal, his current one will expire in the summer, with the French club is sure to intrigue Benitez and the Newcastle hierarchy, who thus could look to strike a deal in January with the forward in a bid to bolster their ranks ahead of the second half of the season.
