Everton supporters in the Transfer Tavern were toasting their side’s return to form over the weekend following a 2-1 win over AFC Bournemouth on Saturday.
The Merseyside outfit were stuck in a rut of four successive defeats in all competitions heading into the weekend’s encounter, a run which saw them concede 12 goals and fail to net in any of them.
Yet, despite going behind to Josh King’s 49th minute effort at Goodison Park on Saturday, Ronald Koeman’s men finally got a win thanks to Oumar Niasse’s late brace, which took them out of the bottom three and provided a much-needed feel-good factor around the ground.
And with Everton’s striking woes well documented so far this season, a recent report in The Daily Mirror is likely to intrigue several of our resident Evertonians, as their club have been linked with a move for Atletico Madrid forward Kevin Gameiro.
The 30-year-old moved to the Spanish capital only last year and went on to score 12 goals in 31 La Liga matches for Diego Simeone’s side last term, although he has struggled to nail down a regular place this time round.
In fact, the France international has managed just 27 minutes of league action in their opening six games of the campaign, and with Chelsea striker Diego Costa set to return to the club in January, it’s not looking good for Gameiro at the Wanda Metropolitano.
And, as such, Koeman’s Everton have been linked with a move for the forward in a bid to solve their own striking issues, issues which has seen them net just four times in the Premier League so far this term.
But whether they are indeed able to prize Gameiro away from Atletico in the near future remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: Kevin Gameiro enjoyed a fine debut season at Atletico Madrid last season, bagging 16 goals in all competitions to help Diego Simone’s side to a third place finish in La Liga, and indeed the semi-finals of the Champions League.
However, the 30-year-old has managed just 27 minutes of league action this term, and Diego Costa’s imminent arrival from Chelsea leaves the Frenchman with much to ponder over the coming months, with regular football becoming an increasingly unlikely proposition.
He’d certainly get that at Everton though, as the Toffees are light in the striking department having sold Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United over the summer, and a move of that ilk in January could be exactly what Gameiro needs to command the first team football his quality and talent deserves.
