Leicester City fans have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern during the international break given the Foxes’ lowly Premier League position.
Craig Shakespeare’s side are just a place above the bottom three having won just one of their opening seven league games, with victory over Brighton on August 19 all our resident Leicester fans have had to cheer about this term.
A 0-0 draw at Bournemouth just prior to the fortnight’s interruption hasn’t helped the mood either, yet a recent report from The Manchester Evening News may well improve the atmosphere among those Foxes fans lining up at the bar.
And that’s because they report that the Midlands outfit are eyeing up a move for former Manchester City defender Bacary Sagna, who remains without a club despite leaving the Etihad Stadium three months ago.
The 34-year-old saw his three-year stint with the Citizens come to an end over the summer at the expiration of his contract, leaving the Frenchman with 86 first team appearances for the Manchester club, in which he helped them win the League Cup back in 2016, but never the Premier League title.
However, the France international remains without a club despite boasting several years of experience, yet recent reports suggest that Leicester could be about to offer him a Premier League lifeline.
The Foxes have struggled in the early stages of this season and may need further depth to climb the table this term, something Sagna would certainly provide in the full-back department.
Yet Shakespeare’s men will likely have to battle Italian side Torino for his signature, leaving the 34-year-old with yet more uncertainty surrounding his future.
Landlord’s verdict: Arguably, Bacary Sagna was the best of the full-backs at Manchester City last season, although at 34 manager Pep Guardiola clearly didn’t feel that he was up to the job on a regular basis.
Nonetheless, it is still surprising that someone like Sagna, who has played 267 Premier League games and 87 Ligue 1 matches during his career, remains without a club almost three months on from his City departure, but that wait could be about to end.
And that’s because Leicester City are reportedly interested in the France international in a bid to bolster their defensive ranks, ranks that have conceded 12 goals in the league thus far (only West Ham and Crystal Palace have shipped more).
Sagna’s previous City wages could scupper the Foxes’ move for the 34-year-old, but there’s little doubt that he’d bring experience to a Leicester backline that have often struggled in the last 12 months or so.
