There were mixed emotions from Southampton supporters in the Transfer Tavern over the weekend after they saw their side only muster a 1-1 draw away to Brighton on Sunday, yet it was enough to move them up a place to ninth in the Premier League table.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s men went into their clash with the Seagulls off the back of a 1-0 win over West Brom in their previous Premier League outing, and they looked like they were on their way to securing back-to-back successes when Steven Davis gave them the lead after just seven minutes. However, they were denied a fourth league victory of the campaign just seven minutes into the second half when Glenn Murray rose highest to nod home Pascal Gross’ excellent cross, although the point still moved the Saints up to ninth in the division and a point clear of their South Coast rivals.
Thus, several of our resident Southampton fans were slightly disappointed not to win the game on Sunday although a few were satisfied with the point, yet they are all likely to be intrigued by a recent report from A Bola (via Sport Witness).
And that’s because they report that scouts from the South Coast outfit were in Portugal over the weekend, firstly watching Rio Ave’s defeat to Sporting Lisbon on Friday before moving on to take in Belenenses’ 3-0 victory over Moreirense a day later.
Bas Dost bagged the winner for Portuguese giants Sporting in their narrow success on Friday night, moving them up to second in the Primeira Liga table, while Belenenses shot up to sixth courtesy of a comfortable victory over Moreirense on Saturday.
And although the report doesn’t disclose who the Saints scouts were keeping tabs on, it’s not the first time this season that they have been on a Portuguese scouting mission, specifically to see games involving Rio Ave and Moreirense.
Thus, it would suggest that there are some players that they are monitoring ahead of future moves, but who they are very much remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: Southampton have had a habit of identifying supremely talented individuals from abroad in recent years, just look at Sadio Mane, Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic, and Cedric Soares to name but a few.
So reports that scouts are looking at the Primeira Liga are likely going to intrigue Southampton fans, who may well be looking at Rio Ave and Moreirense squad lists, two sides the Saints appear to be keeping a close eye on, to see who their club may look to sign.
And given their success in the recent past in the transfer market, one would back them to get it right should they indeed make a move for a talented individual from that league in the coming transfer windows.
