Potentially significant boost for Liverpool as promising transfer reports emerge

Liverpool supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team brush aside West Ham 4-1 at the London Stadium on Saturday evening, in turn moving up to fifth place in the Premier League table.

Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the struggling Hammers off the back of beating Huddersfield Town and Maribor, and first half strikes from Mohamed Salah and Joel Matip set them on their way to another three points. And although Manuel Lanzini got one back for the home side, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain restored their two-goal advantage almost immediately before Salah sealed a third win in the space of seven days with his second and Liverpool’s fourth 15 minutes from the end.

Thus, there have been many happy Liverpudlians in the Tavern this week, and they are likely to become even chirpier if a recent report from TMW Radio (via TEAMtalk) is anything to go by, which suggests that Lazio defender Stefan de Vrij could be available for as little as €25 million.

The 25-year-old made the move to the Italian giants back in 2014 after a 12-year association with Feyenoord, and he has since gone from strength to strength with several impressive displays at the heart of their backline.

The Netherlands international appeared 27 times in Serie A last term to help Lazio secure fifth place and thus a spot in this season’s Europa League, and it’s form which reportedly attracted the interest of Klopp’s Liverpool over the summer.

And although the Reds didn’t get a deal done, they may well have received a huge boost ahead of coming windows as Italian sports reporter Niccolo Ceccarini told TMW Radio (via TEAMtalk): ‘On De Vrij, it seems like Lazio may have lowered their demands concerning his release clause.

‘At 25 million euros, an agreement can be found.

‘As for his salary, Lazio will offer him a big salary which would see him become one of the highest paid players in their team if he renews his deal with the club.’

Thus, these comments are sure to intrigue manager Klopp and indeed our resident Liverpool fans, although with Juventus also thought to be interested, they will have to act fast to bring the Dutchman to Anfield.

Landlord’s verdict: Liverpool’s defensive woes have been well-documented for a while now and they do not seem to be improving, having conceded 17 goals already in the Premier League this season.

That’s more than all but one side currently in the division’s top 13 places, yet it does appear that manager Jurgen Klopp has defenders on his radar as he was reportedly interested in Lazio’s Stefan de Vrij during the summer.

The 25-year-old has been mightily impressive for the Italian club since moving there in 2014, yet it appears that he could be available for as little as €25 million, which in today’s money is not a lot at all.

And with Liverpool in dire need of reinforcements, they surely have to move for the Dutchman in the coming transfer windows.
