Liverpool supporters were in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern over the weekend after seeing their side breeze past West Ham 4-1 at the London Stadium, a result which moved them up to fifth place in the Premier League.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the East London outfit having beaten both Huddersfield Town and Maribor earlier in the week, and they rounded off an impressive week with a comprehensive victory against the Hammers. Mohamed Salah and Joel Matip netted in the first half to send them on their way, and although Manuel Lanzini got one back for the hosts ten minutes into the second half, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain restored their two-goal advantage less than a minute later before Salah bagged his second and the Reds’ fourth 15 minutes from time.
Thus, there was an optimistic mood among our resident Liverpool supporters in the Tavern over the weekend, however they may be slightly more downbeat with a recent report from CalcioMercato, which outlines some potentially significant information regarding Benfica’s Alejandro Grimaldo, a reported target of the Merseysiders.
The 22-year-old made the move to the Portuguese champions back in 2016 after coming up through the ranks at Barcelona, and he has since gone from strength to strength with 37 appearances for the club, in which time he has netted two goals and laid on six assists.
And although injury has somewhat thwarted his progress at the European heavyweights, there’s little doubt that Grimaldo is a talented defender with a huge future in the game, and as such Liverpool have reportedly been linked with a move for the former Spain youth international in recent times.
However, their pursuit may well have taken a hit as reports suggest that Benfica will hold out for at least €40 million for the youngster’s services, which may be too high a price to pay for someone who has never played in the Premier League, and doesn’t appear to be able to consistently shake off injuries.
But whether that does indeed put the Reds off moving for Grimaldo in future transfer windows remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: It has been well-documented for a while now that Liverpool’s problems aren’t going forward, they are going back.
Jurgen Klopp’s men have already conceded 17 goals in the Premier League this season which is more than all but one side in the top 13 in the division, and thus is evidently something that needs addressing.
And left-back Alejandro Grimaldo may well have been the answer, especially with that side of the pitch being a particular problem area for Klopp given that James Milner deputised there last term, although the improved Alberto Moreno has reclaimed that spot.
But the Reds will be forced to pay a substantial sum of money to lure the Spaniard to England, and given he had injury troubles last year and has never played in the Premier League, they may decide against pursuing the 22-year-old.
