Liverpool supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side secure a third win in the space of seven days by battering West Ham 4-1 at the London Stadium on Saturday, a result which moved them up to fifth in the Premier League table.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the struggling Hammers off the back of victories over Huddersfield Town and Maribor, and they raced into a 2-0 lead in East London thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah and Joel Matip in the first half. And although Manuel Lanzini got one back for the hosts ten minutes after the break, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain restored the Reds’ two-goal cushion almost immediately, before the impressive Salah bagged his second and Liverpool’s fourth 15 minutes from time to complete the rout.
Thus, there has been a buzz among our resident Liverpudlians in the Tavern this week, and they are likely to be further encouraged by a recent report from Football Whispers (via The Daily Mirror), which suggests that the Reds have upped the ante in their pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen’s Kai Havertz.
The 18-year-old came up through the youth ranks at the Bundesliga outfit to earn his senior debut for the club back in October 2016, coming on as a substitute in their 2-1 league defeat to Werder Bremen.
And the midfielder has since gone from strength to strength with 37 further first team appearances for the German side, in which he has netted four goals and laid on nine assists to underline his credentials in the final third of the pitch.
And it’s form which has reportedly attracted the attention of Klopp’s Liverpool, and they may well be close to sealing a deal for the youngster as reports suggest that he has already visited the club’s training ground, having done so back in October.
Thus, this potentially significant development suggests that Liverpool’s interest in Havertz may well be concrete, but whether that visit was enough to persuade him of a move to Merseyside remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: Liverpool have made a solid if unspectacular start to the new season, what with Jurgen Klopp’s men sat fifth in the Premier League table and yet to book their spot in the last 16 of the Champions League.
However, things have certainly appeared a lot brighter in recent weeks, and there may be more good news to follow for Reds supporters as target Kai Havertz, a midfield sensation from Germany, has reportedly visited Melwood training ground.
This suggests that the Reds’ interest in the youngster may well be concrete, and given that he has burst onto the scene with four goals and nine assists in the last 12 months or so for Bayer Leverkusen, it’s hardly a surprise.
Other clubs are also interested in the 18-year-old’s services, but Liverpool have upped the ante and it may pay dividends in the coming transfer windows.
