Newcastle United and West Ham supporters in the Transfer Tavern were left deflated and despondent by their respective sides over the weekend, with the Magpies losing at Burnley while the Hammers let slip a two-goal lead to draw against bottom club Crystal Palace.
Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle knew that victory over the Clarets on Monday night would have propelled them up to sixth place in the Premier League table, but Jeff Hendrick’s second half strike secured a 1-0 win for Sean Dyche’s side, who subsequently moved above the Magpies and into seventh in the table. Whereas Slaven Bilic’s West Ham were cruising at Selhurst Park thanks to goals from Javier Hernandez and Andre Ayew, but they were left bitterly disappointed come the final whistle as a Luka Milivojevic penalty and 97th minute strike from Wilfried Zaha secured a 2-2 draw for Roy Hodgson’s side.
Thus, neither set of supporters are overly joyed in the Tavern this week, but they might be intrigued and perhaps uplifted by a recent report from Sporx, which suggests that both clubs have been scouting Galatasaray midfielder Papa Badou Ndiaye in recent times.
The 27-year-old only made the move to the Turkish giants during the summer after an impressive two-year spell at Osmanlispor, with whom he scored 18 goals and laid on seven assists in just 75 appearances.
And that form earned him a move to Galatasaray over the summer but he hasn’t quite hit the heights at the club, having failed to net or lay on an assist in ten Super Lig appearances, yet that hasn’t stopped scouts from Newcastle and West Ham, among others, reportedly keeping tabs on his progress.
In fact, scouts from the Premier League duo were in attendance as Ndiaye’s Galatasaray lost 2-1 at Trabzonspor on Saturday, a game in which the midfielder was sent off for a second yellow card in the final minute.
Thus, whether either Newcastle or West Ham do indeed look to firm up their interest in the Senegal international very much remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: Papa Badou Ndiaye certainly earned his move to Turkish giants Galatasaray during the summer, having scored 18 goals in just 75 games for Super Lig rivals Osmanlispor in the two years previous.
And although the 27-year-old only moved in the summer, it hasn’t stopped several sides scouting the midfielder in recent times, with Newcastle United and West Ham reportedly interested in his services.
Both sides could do with midfield reinforcements in January in a bid to bolster their ranks and improve their respective squads, but given he hasn’t quite got going yet at Galatasaray, it remains to be seen whether they feel that Ndiaye is the man to strengthen their midfield options.
