It’s fair to say that Sir Alex hasn’t had the best of times when it comes to nurturing young players into the Old Trafford first team of late with Paul Pogba turning his back on Manchester in favour of Turin and United were finally forced into losing patience with the once promising Ravel Morrison.
The United manager will be hoping his latest young propsect’s career in Manchester will be a more long term affair after capturing the much sought after Crewe youngster Nick Powell.

The Mirror believe the England under-18 international has penned a four-year deal at Old Trafford, after this long rumoured deal finally came to fruition.
United’s pursuit of Powell has been less than secretive after Sir Alex amongst others was spotted by the Sky cameras at several Crewe Games, with Sir Alex quoted in The Mirror as stating:
“We have scouted Nick for months now, he is an exceptional talent and has been schooled well at Crewe.”
“I’m delighted he has chosen to come to United. He has a lot to offer and we are all looking forward to working with him.”
Although Powell does look a talent, demonstrated by this FA TV footage of him scoring at England under-17 level, a decent season in League 2 does not immediately suggest a player ready for the challenges of the Premiership but the rhetoric of all parties concerned appears to indicate that Powell will be facing Premiership opposition rather than a loan move next season.
Powell himself has told The Mirror:
“The thought of making the step up to the Premier League next year is an exciting prospect. I can’t wait to get started.”
While it is important for players to become familiar with the culture and expectations of United at this stage of his career Powell would seemed more suited to gaining first team experience elsewhere before embarking on a first-team career at Old Trafford, a move that has served players from David Beckham to Tom Cleverley perfectly.Like what the TT have on offer?
