The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are longing out for a player like Patrick Viera. The New York City FC manager was the heart in the middle of the Arsenal first team during his run under Arsene Wenger, and since his departure, they’re yet to really replace him.
This summer, then, especially with Unai Emery in charge, perhaps they’ll finally find their Viera successor.
However, he’s proven to be a very difficult man to replace, as proven by how long it has taken Arsenal to do so, but Chelsea midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko could be a good choice.
Rated at £36 million by Transfer Markt, it’s fair to say that Bakayoko hasn’t had the best spell in the Premier League, and that may put fans off.
However, they shouldn’t be too quick to judge. Bakayoko has shown moments of brilliance during his time in London, and on his day he has controlled the Chelsea midfield. Furthermore, he was also a star for Monaco in the French top flight, and after a year of transition in the Premier League, next season could see him flourish.
In terms of what he can offer, his playstyle draws many parallels with Toure. He’s strong and powerful, and that makes him a real presence in the midfield. Furthermore, he’s also quick and excellent at driving forward, and like Viera, he can often be at the centrepiece of quick counter-attacks.
Clearly, he’s not at Viera’s level yet, but the potential is there, and under a manager like Emery, the sky truly is the limit.
