United have received a welcome boost with the return of Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand, who missed the win over Bolton on Saturday. Bayern have doubts over the fitness of winger Arjen Robben, who injured his calf in Bayern’s win over Schalke at the weekend.
The stats don’t favour United for this game: in the last seven attempts, they have only won once, and that was in Barcelona when United won the Champions League in 1999.
Ryan Giggs, who played in that side eleven years ago, says of tonight’s opposition:
“Bayern have a lot of trickery with Ribery and Robben and some other individual match-winners.
But our European record in recent times has been good and if we play to the best of our ability we really fancy ourselves.”
Prediction: It’s going to be a close game and United will want to get something they can take back to Old Trafford for the second leg. I’m going for a United win – Bayern Munich 1 Man United 2.
