Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern are getting rowdy with excitement as they order their ale this afternoon, amidst reports of a quality signing that wouldn’t cost them a penny.
The Times says Manchester United are yet to offer Michael Carrick a new deal at Old Trafford and Newcastle United are ready to swoop, with the aim of bringing the England international back to his native North-East.
Should Carrick not pen a new deal with United, with a new deal being something he’s actively seeking, Newcastle will look to land the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder on a free transfer.
Steve McClaren’s side have quietly been assembling a strong English core on Tyneside, with the recent additions of Andros Townsend and Jonjo Shelvey adding to their contingent.
Newcastle fans love nothing more than a local hero and Carrick, who was born in nearby Wallsend, would fit the bill nicely.
It remains to be seen whether a new deal for Carrick would be forthcoming but our landlord feels a switch to Tyneside would be an excellent career move for the ageing midfielder.
