Premier League duo Newcastle United and Watford are set to lock horns to secure the signing of Leicester City striker Islam Slimani, according to The Daily Mirror.
The Newcastle fans here in the Transfer Tavern have been bitterly disappointed with the club’s summer recruitment and the squad at present isn’t really much better than the one that won promotion from the Championship last season.
Algerian international Slimani hasn’t really established himself in the Leicester side and a departure could be on the horizon before the transfer window slams shut.
The 29-year-old cost just shy of £30 million just last summer and it is likely that the Foxes will have to take a massive hit if they are too offload the striker who netted twice in the midweek cup win over Sheffield United.
A few Leicester fans here in the Tavern are sat discussing the 29-year-old and the general consensus is that he is miles behind the likes of Jamie Vardy and Shinji Okazaki in the pecking order for a starting berth.
Newcastle and Watford would both relish the chance to add to their ranks before the window closes and a move for the lively striker could be one worth pursuing.
The Landlord’s Verdict
The jury remains firmly out on whether or not Slimani is capable of scoring regular goals in the English Premier League.
Given that Newcastle will be fighting a battle to stay in the Premier League this season, a move to Watford might be more appealing for the Algerian.
At 29-years-old it really is now or never for Slimani and he needs to grasp his next move with both hands.
