We at Football Transfer Tavern have been mightily impressed with Southampton winger Jason Puncheon this season but a contract dispute has alerted Newcastle United and West Ham United about his potential availability.
The 26-year-old winger is out of contract at the end of the season and the Saints are yet to open discussions regarding a new deal at St. Mary’s.
It is thought that Southampton chairman Nicola Cortese does not want to sign any players down to new long-term deals until the clubs Premier League survival is confirmed and new manager Mauricio Pochettino will be able to bring in his own players next season.
Puncheon and Cortese have had their troubles in the past and the former Wimbledon, Barnet, Plymouth Argyle and Blackpool winger was put on the transfer list last season and eventually loaned out to Queens Park Rangers due to his attitude and comments about the club.
Those problems have since been swept under the carpet but West Ham and Newcastle are sure to be joined by plenty of other clubs to approach the player if he is out of contract at the end of the season.
“I am happy here and that is the most important thing” Puncheon told The Sun.
