Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern have been in a gloomy mood, with the realisation their title push could be over prematurely, but there’s a sense of optimism on their face as they order a new round after being formed of some interesting news.
The Daily Mirror says Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama is stalling on a new contract and wants to wait until the summer, amid reported interest from Arsenal and their North London rivals Tottenham.
24-year-old Kenyan international Wanyama has risen to fame in the Premier League since moving south of the border from Celtic in 2013 and the Saints are keen to tie him down to a new deal, as he’ll have just 12 months remaining on his contract come the summer.
That could see Wanyama moved on for a reduced price in the next transfer window, something Southampton experienced last year with Nathaniel Clyne’s departure to Liverpool, and the Saints want to ensure that doesn’t happen again.
A five-year deal is on the table for Wanyama but his reluctance to sign is raising concern on the South Coast, with the punters in the bar worried another one of their stars will be prized from their clutches.
Our landlord believes something has to change at Southampton, given the mass exodus in recent years, and states an exit for Wanyama would be hugely concerning with Sadio Mane already looking likely to leave.
