Swansea fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are left scratching their heads after their star man revealed he offered to play for Liverpool for free, luckily for them the Reds opted out of the deal.
According to the Daily Mail, Swansea forward Andre Ayew wanted to sign for his boyhood club so badly that he offered to play for Liverpool for free.
The 26-year-old’s contract was winding down at Marseille and having spent his entire professional career at the French giants he was keen to move onto another European heavyweight.
Which is why he offered to play for Liverpool for free up until January to show what he was made of, but instead Brendan Rodgers overlooked this option and instead signed Danny Ings and Christian Benteke.
Agent Mark McKay of ExcelFoot, who handled Ayew’s Swansea transfer, said: “It has always been Andre’s dream to play for Liverpool but unfortunately they opted to pursue other targets at the time.”
This led to Rodgers’ previous club Swansea signing him up, after beating West Ham to his signature.
Since his arrival to the Liberty Stadium he has helped the Swans fight off relegation during a turbulent season, having scored 10 league goals.
Our landlord here in the Transfer Tavern admit he’s surprised at this news, and feels Ayew could have been an astute signing for the Merseyside outfit!
