It’s been a busy time for Liverpool supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern lately, with the Reds completing their fourth summer signing in the form of Serbian winger Lazar Markovic yesterday.
And sources at The Telegraph reckon the Reds tried to make it five with the signing of Swansea City left back Ben Davies, only to see their £8 million bid rejected by the South Wales club.
Brendan Rodgers has identified the 21-year-old Welsh international as the man to solve his problematic left back position, after deploying natural right back Jon Flanagan there for much of last season.
But negotiations with Swansea are proving difficult, with Garry Monk’s side upset by the way in which the Reds have pursued their star striker Wilfried Bony.
Rodgers is keen to strengthen his squad following the £75 million sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona last week and took the Anfield club’s spending past the £60 million mark with the signing of Markovic (pictured) yesterday.
The 20-year-old completed his move to Anfield for a fee believed to be in the region of £20 million following some complicated negotiations involving third party ownership.
“This is an exciting signing for us and one that improves our squad, in terms of attacking options,” said Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers.
“He was hugely impressive for Benfica last season and has proved he has the ability to produce the goods in European competition as well, which will be important for us.
“Lazar is flexible to play a number of positions, but I like the way he attacks games and is always positive and looking to make something happen. He will fit in with the way we play at Liverpool.
“Getting him at such a young age is also very pleasing for us, because we will be able to work with him to develop his talent within our group and improve him even further. He is the sort of character who is hungry to get better and progress.”
