As with most weekends in the Premier League, we have seen our share of drama, excitement and quality from players up and down the country which just helps to underpin why we all love the sport that is football. While there have been many moments of brilliance and stand out performances, who has found their way in to the dream team this weekend…
Robert Green (West Ham) – The England keeper seems to be recapturing some of the form which previously caught the eye of Fabio Capello some months ago as the 30 year old put a strong performance making numerous saves to keep West Ham level in their 1-1 draw with Fulham.
Sotirios Kyrgiakos (Liverpool) – Despite conceding two goals in what was considered one of the worst home defeats for Liverpool in recent years as they lost 2-1 to newly promoted Blackpool, the Greek defender momentarily lead the Liverpool fight back, superbly heading in a Steven Gerrard cross.
Leighton Baines (Everton) – Was a constant menace against the Birmingham defence all afternoon pressing forward down the left hand side at every opportunity, setting up Tim Cahill to grab Everton’s second and secure their first league win of the season in the process.
Nedum Onuoha (Sunderland) -Put in a defensive performance that manager Steve Bruce would be proud of as defender on loan from Manchester City put in a strong performance to help Sunderland keep Manchester United at bay in a 0-0 draw, with Onuoha unlucky not to grab the winner as his shot was some how hacked off the line.
Alex (Chelsea) – Superbly kept the Arsenal attacking line at bay with defensive partner John Terry and the Brazilian capped out a brilliant afternoon with an unstoppable free kick with flew into the top corner to seal a 2-0 victory for the Stamford Bridge side.
Matthew Etherington (Stoke) – The midfield playmaker has established himself as one of the bright stars at Stoke City and he further demonstrated this tag by setting up Jonathan Walters to seal a solid 1-0 victory at home to Blackburn Rovers.
Jordi Gomez (Wigan) – The Spanish midfielder survived a horror tackle at the hands of Wolves defender Karl Henry and later proved his worth to the Latics side as he fired home a lovely second half free kick as Wigan ran out comfortable 2-0 winners at home.
Rafael Van Der Vaart (Tottenham) – Showed why he is still considered one of the best players in the world as the Dutch international commanded the centre of the field at White Hart Lane, grabbing both goals as Spurs gained a vital 2-1 win over league rivals Aston Villa.
Peter Crouch (Tottenham) – Crouch’s tall presence made it almost impossible for Aston Villas defensive line to compete aerially and although Crouch himself didn’t get on the score sheet, his assists for both of Van Der Vaart’s goals showed what an important part of the Spurs squad the former Liverpool striker is.
Didier Drogba (Chelsea) – Typical Didier Drogba performance, hassled the Arsenal attack all afternoon never letting them rest, grabbing a superb opening goal as he someone put Ashley Coles near post cross flamboyantly in the net.
Luke Varney (Blackpool) – On loan from Championship side Derby County but the striker showed the coolness of an experiences Premier League striker as the 28 year old showed great composure to calmly slot the ball past Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina to put the Seasider’s 2-0 on the way to their memorable victory.
