Premier League Weekend Dream Team

 Wojciech Szczesny

The Arsenal stopper had an awkward start to the game, conceding a penalty with a wayward tackle on Luis Suarez. But as Liverpool continued to dominate an extraordinary affair, Szczesny produced one of the finest goalkeeping displays of the season. Arsenal’s back line was a shambles throughout, but it seems Wenger has finally found a keeper capable of performing in the big occasions, as he contributed to one of the biggest smash and grabs of this term.

 Bacary Sagna

Sagna was the only stable component in a ticking time bomb of a defense for the Gunners. The Frenchman has now surely established himself as one of the best full backs around, and his delivery from wide areas was showcased again as he superbly set up Van Persie for his first.

 Steven Caulker

The on loan spurs stopper looks to be following in the footsteps of players such as Kyle Walker, as he continues to impress for Premier League new boys Swansea. The 20 year old has only played 16 times for the Swans, but has established himself in the top league quickly in that time. And in his sides 2-0 win over relegation strugglers Wigan the defender was solid throughout, whilst also contributing in attack with an assist for Gylfi Sigurdsson’s opener. Seems destined for big things in the future.

 Gareth Mcauly

Was part of an Albion side who looked comfortable against a feeble Chelsea attack and was composed throughout. The Northern Ireland defender also provided the vital moment of the match in diverting Liam Ridgewell’s wayward drive past Petr Cech, to finally put an end to a turbulent time for AVB.

 John Arne Riise

Has been a consistent if not heralded performer for Fulham this season. Troubled a facial Wolves outfit as he provided a useful outlet in a ruthless attacking display for the home side.

 Gylfi Sigurdsson

Continued his impressive goal scoring form in English football with a brace on Saturday. The Hoffenheim loanee has been one of the signings of the January window, and is key to Swansea’s free flowing football. Another player who needs to be tied down to a permanent deal.

 Ya Ya Toure

Has been an absolute beast all season, Bolton were the latest side to be overwhelmed by the midfielders dominance. If City are to retain their lead at the top of the table, and continue to fend off their improving neighbours, then Toure must remain fit along with the excellent Kompany and Silva. Would easily grace most midfield’s in this form.

 Clint Dempsey

The best American to ever play on these shores was excellent again for an impressive Fulham side. Now on 18 goals for the season, the 28 year old has easily been one of the best players in the league and indeed over the past few seasons has proven himself as a consistent performer. The Cottagers will need to hold on to their man if they’re to build on their impressive progress.

 Ashley Young

Had a terrible first half, squandering the ball on numerous occasions as Spurs controlled the play. But roared back to prominence in the second with two excellent goals, the second one of the efforts of the weekend as he swept the ball home past former team mate Brad Friedel. The summer signing is beginning to return to the scintillating form he showed in the early stages of the campaign, and will be vital for England this summer.

 Robin Van Persie

Had very few moments as Arsenal barely held on at Anfield. But the classy forward won the game for the Gunners with two clinical finishes typical of a man in the form of his life. The best player in the league by a mile.

 Pavel Progrebnyak

Has been a revelation since his move from Stuttgart. The Russian only scored a single goal in the first half of his campaign in the Bundesliga, but has scored five times in just three games for his new club. Martin Jol has already expressed his desire to tie the striker to a permanent deal with the club, and with the quality he showcased against an admittedly poor Wolves side, you can see why.
