Twelve months ago, Andre Ayew was not particularly well known, now he seems a bit of a household name. Well he is known around the Tavern anyway, but there again round these parts all we know is football and the relative strengths of different beers, so maybe it’s not so surprising.
Over recent weeks there have been reports suggesting that Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal have all been interested in Andre Ayew and now our friends at talksport have got their mitts on some quotes from the player that essentially pour water on such rumours.
Ayew has been a top performer for Marseille this season after struggling to find a place for himself in previous seasons. The 21 year old has spent a couple of seasons on loan with other clubs, but this term he has impressed for Marseille. The left winger has managed to score 8 times this year in all competitions and has put in some excellent performances in both domestic and European competition.
It is believed that he originally caught the attention of Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United when the defensive side of his game kept Nani so quiet during the first leg of their recent Champions League game with Marseille. Liverpool saw him as another possible wideman to aid their rejuvenation, and Arsene Wenger has also been an admirer of the players talents.
It appears now however that Ayew has quashed these reports, he told French paper Le Parisien:
“Marseille is a great club and I am well here. I love the supporters and the manager treats me well so I look forward to being here for a long time.”
Comments like that suggested that Ayew probably woouldn’t be on the move this Summer, but there was always a chance. Talksport suggest that there is still a possibility that he may be sold, if the club is offered the £15million that they value him at. It is a strange situation really, with the player professing his love for a club that may still be persuaded to sell him.
The 21 year old is looking like a fine prospect, and although I imagine he will remain at Marseille this year, it is probably just a matter of time before he moves onto bigger things. It feels impossible to say at this point where it may be, but this news today could be pretty frustrating to a few clubs, including Liverpool.
Yesterday however the quote below emerged courtesy of Ghanaweb, suggesting that having been scouted by Manchester United and now Chelsea the player had mellowed on the idea of moving…
‘I am delighted to be linked with two powerhouses of world football. It means I have improved, ‘he said.
‘I have not got a favorite, I am just speechless! “
This transfer has got ‘Will go to the wire’ written all over it.
