Arsenal’s first real test of the season comes on Sunday at the Etihad when they take on the champions Man City. With Arsene Wenger believing that his team can mount a serious title challenge this season, Sunday’s game will be the clearest indication yet of how far Arsene’s team have come after the summer departures.
“We will know after 10 games,” said the Frenchman of Arsenal’s title chances.
“I think we have a chance. But do we develop well, do we keep our attitude? I think we have a chance but at the moment I don’t know how strong our opponents are. We’ve not played against any of the title contenders yet,” added Wenger.
Both teams will be looking for improve on their midweek exploits, despite the fact that the Gunners picked up an away win with their tricky away trip to Montpellier. Man City will be looking to put behind the disappointment of Tuesday’s defeat to Real Madrid and kick-start their Premier League campaign.
Though City are favourite’s for Sunday’s clash, I think the Gunners will continue their excellent start to the season and pick up a narrow victory. If Podolski and Cazorla are on form, then Man City’s back line may struggle to cope.
If Arsenal want to neutralise Man City’s threat, they will need to make sure Yaya Toure is kept quiet. The marauding midfielder was one of few positives to come from the game against Real Madrid and showed his class at the Bernabeu. Whoever is given the task of keeping track of him, whether it be Diaby or Coquelin, they will need to make sure they stick tight to him and make sure that he is not given time and space on the ball.
Man City contributed to their downfall on Tuesday by defending very deep towards the end of the game, inviting wave after wave of pressure from Real. If they do this again on Sunday, then Arsenal have the players that can create chances and punish them.
Expect a tight encounter, with plenty of free-flowing football on show. This game should live up to its billing and prove to be a classic encounter.
