The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern have been reacting with a classic mixture of optimism and pessimism to the news that Unai Emery has been chosen to succeed Arsene Wenger at the Emirates Stadium.
A quick glance at Emery’s history in European football would suggest that the supporters should be fairly pleased by his appointment, but concerns over his record in the Champions League are rife amongst the Gunners faithful. The Spaniard has a huge task on his hands this summer in attempting to rebuild his squad for the new season, but there is one task which he simply has to make his priority – to extend Aaron Ramsey’s contract.
Arsenal’s player of the season has been at the club for more than 7 years, but with only 1 year remaining on his current deal his future hangs firmly in the balance. Rumours which link him with a move away from the Emirates have been a consistent headline-maker in recent weeks, however, reports from Sky Sports should ease the fears of the Arsenal supporters somewhat.
According to the report, Emery is set to make Ramsey central to his plans next season, despite the speculation concerning his future at the club. Emery’s decision is certainly a wise one considering the Welsh international seemed to rediscover his best form last season, but he must ensure that he cements Ramsey’s status as a central figure by offering him a lucrative contract extension in the coming weeks.
With Ramsey (valued at £36 million by Transfermarkt) close to entering the final year of his contract, there’s no doubt that potential suitors will be monitoring his situation and contemplating a bid for his services, so Emery must quash speculation and avoid any unnecessary distractions next season by extending his deal sooner rather than later.
During a period of transition, it’s vital that Emery ensures a key figure like Ramsey remains at the club, so he must prioritise his future above all other tasks during the opening weeks of his reign at the club.
