In the modern era football fans are often guilty of falling into the trap of forming fickle opinions based purely on short-term factors, and plenty of Everton supporters fell into that said trap during the summer transfer window when they turned on their most exciting young prospect.
Ademola Lookman started the 2017/18 campaign as nothing more than a potential wonderkid to watch; a player who was threatening to break into the first-team who commanded deep interest amongst the expectant fan base.
Cameo performances from the substitutes bench and two starts in the Europa League provided enough evidence to point towards a glowing future for the compelling wing-wizard, but with opportunities expected to be limited under Sam Allardyce he embarked on a short term loan deal with RB Leipzig.
His time in the Bundesliga was game-changing. A short and sweet spell in east Germany saw Lookman bag five goals and provide four assists from just eleven Bundesliga fixtures, sparking rumours of a permanent transfer worth £28 million in the summer.
The prospect of pocketing a significant profit on the £7.9 million Everton initially paid for Lookman was not deemed an enticing enough prospect for the club’s hierarchy to accept the offer – and that fact is telling about how highly he is regarded on Merseyside.
Shortly after Lookman’s arrival, Ronald Koeman tipped him to develop into “a really top player,” and it was perhaps the Dutchman’s dismissal from his post as Everton boss which restricted the England youth international’s opportunities last season.
Under Marco Silva, Lookman has once again been restricted to cameos, but a quick-witted slalom through the heart of Chelsea’s defence last weekend hinted that he is on the verge of convincing the Portuguese manager that he is worthy of a proper opportunity to showcase his talent.
Based on what Lookman has demonstrated in his short career thus far, it’s without doubt that he possesses the potential to blossom into a legend at Goodison Park, providing he is willing to fight for his place.
With dazzling dribbling and a deadly end-product at the heart of his game, Lookman is bound to get the Everton supporters on their feet as the season develops, and it may only be a matter of time before he lifts the lingering tension from an acrimonious summer window with a string of captivating performances.
