Profit Players: David Luiz

This article forms part of our Profit Players feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how well a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how good of a deal the club managed to achieve.

After signing from London rivals Chelsea, Glen Johnson was of the opinion that David Luiz is not a ‘solid’ enough defender and that he is simply not good enough for the club (via talkSPORT).

He said: “He likes to play football, he enjoys the game and he plays it the right way but Arsenal need something solid and I don’t think he’s the man for that.” (Source: talkSPORT)

However, after two consecutive solid performances against Manchester United and Bournemouth, that £8m paid for him may just be beginning to look like a bargain.

In the game against United, Luiz was brilliant as he finished with the most clearances, most blocks, won the second-most aerial duels and made the second-most interceptions (via WhoScored). Arsenal have often struggled at Old Trafford in recent years, and it is clear to see that Luiz’s experience was one of a number of factors in the club getting a point.

Against the Cherries, the north London giants were penned back for most of the second half, not having a single shot on target as they defended a slender 1-0 lead (via BBC). The 32-year-old continued where he left off against United, making the joint-most interceptions, the third-most clearances and winning the third-most aerial duels. He also scored the winning goal – if Unai Emery’s side were to finish fourth by one or two points, Luiz could be one of the reasons why they’ll play Champions League football next season.

BBC pundit Garth Crooks included Luiz in his team of the week after his performance against Bournemouth, commenting on how he helped keep a clean sheet (via BBC).

Calum Chambers was also complimentary of the Brazil international’s leadership skills. He said: “…he talks to you, gives you advice and makes everyone feel like he is giving you his undivided attention.” (Source: Arsenal)

While Luiz has given away two penalties so far in his short career at the Emirates Stadium, he is beginning to look solid for the Gunners and looking every bit worth the £18m he is valued on Transfermarkt.
