There is no denying that Eric Dier has not been at his best for some time now.
Since interest from Manchester United back in the summer of 2017 (Independent), the 25-year-old has had a bit of decline.
Still, Dier remains a very useful player to have in any squad. And at the £4.5m (Transfermarkt) Tottenham paid Sporting Lisbon for him, he cannot be described as anything other than a bargain.
In the Premier League, there might not be a more aggressive and stronger tackler than the England international.
From the base of midfield, Dier is great at stopping promising attacks be it with a crunching tackle or a foul as clear as day.
Whatever the method, it works and has helped Tottenham acquire a nastiness that all the big teams have.
Prior, the north London club would get so easily rolled over in some of their more important clashes, showing little fight and an incapability to limit the most dangerous attacks in the country.
It is probably his versatility, the ability to play in central defence as well as in midfield, though, that has made Dier such a good acquisition to this Tottenham squad.
It is something Mauricio Pochettino has often looked to utilise since bringing Dier from Sporting, with his 2014 arrival helping the Argentinian to be flexible with his formations.
At 25 and working under a coach like Pochettino, Tottenham supporters will be expecting Dier to return to his best sooner rather than later.
If not, well, the north London club still got a lot from a player who cost just £4.5m in a market that has gone crazy in recent summers.
