Part of the wave of new signings who were brought in with the money Tottenham acquired from Gareth Bale’s sale to Real Madrid, Etienne Capoue did not enjoy the best of times at White Hart Lane.
Like the majority of those other new signings, the 30-year-old was quickly deemed as a flop.
So when Quique Flores Sanchez and Watford decided to buy the French midfielder from Tottenham back in 2015, some eyebrows were raised.
Years later, though, and Capoue has proven to be a great buy for the Hornets, especially at the £8.01m (Transfermarkt) they paid.
At first, it may not have looked like it. Capoue failed to score a single Premier League goal in his debut season.
However, the campaign after, the France international managed to register seven goals, an incredible tally for a midfielder who could not even find the back of the net once in the previous term.
Since then, Capoue’s goalscoring exploits have diminished significantly. The former Tottenham man has gone back to being a player who is not productive in the final third.
That being said, he has still been an extremely useful asset to Javi Gracia in the middle of the park.
Alongside Abdoulaye Doucoure, Capoue is an absolute engine, travelling box-to-box and winning the ball in between.
Looking at the duo, there might not be a more energetic and hard-working pair of midfielders in the Premier League.
While he may have been a flop at Tottenham, for Watford, Capoue has been anything but.
