Of late, Chelsea have been absolutely atrocious at the back, with their latest poor defensive showing coming in that recent 2-2- draw against Burnley.
Neither David Luiz nor Andreas Christensen convinced on the night, and the Blues now look like they are in desperate need of another central defender going into next season.
FIFA’s transfer embargo could prevent them from dipping into the market to get just that. But thanks to Kurt Zouma, they might not actually need to do that to solve their defensive dilemmas.
The 24-year-old has been in impressive form out on loan at Everton this campaign, and has looked like a much better defender than most of the current ones on Chelsea’s books.
When you consider the fact that the west London club paid £31.5m (Transfermarkt) to bring Luiz back from Paris Saint-Germain, the £13.14m (Transfermarkt) they spent on Zouma is seeming more and more of a bargain.
Perhaps Jose Mourinho and Michael Emenalo were onto something when they decided to bin the Brazilian and give his spot in the squad to the France international, who was brought in from St. Etienne.
Out of the two, Zouma is simply the more reliable defender, one you can put trust and faith in.
He will not complicate things, booting the ball into row Z when necessary. Perhaps that has been his downfall, with a manager such as Maurizio Sarri being insistent on his team playing out of the back at all times.
But if you are looking at just natural defending, Zouma, a strong tackler and aerially dominant figure, is better than Luiz and arguably anything else his parent club have to offer.
