Liverpool fans will have plenty of good memories from Raheem Sterling’s time at the club, but seeing him ditch Anfield for the Etihad certainly didn’t please supporters.
Raheem Sterling joined Liverpool from Queens Park Rangers for £630k (as per Transfermarkt) back in 2010 which saw him go into the youth system, and it’s safe to say that the fee paid now looks like absolute peanuts.
The attacker was arguably one of England’s brightest prospects during his early days at Liverpool as he made his senior debut as a 17-year-old. He slowly grew in ability over the years and became a fan favourite at Anfield due to the sheer amount of goals and assists he was producing towards the end of his time at the club.
His partnership with Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez gave fans plenty to shout about and he very almost helped the Reds secure an elusive Premier League trophy under Brendan Rodgers.
Overall he made 129 appearances for the Reds’ senior team, producing 23 goals and 25 assists.
However, things weren’t always perfect for the Englishman as he was often criticised for his shooting ability after squandering a number of chances on Merseyside.
But, it’s safe to say he’s silenced those critics since moving to the Etihad as he’s in the form of his life at this moment in time and is arguably one of the world’s best attackers, having produced 23 goals and 16 assists this season.
Liverpool sold the attacker for £57.33 million (as per Transfermarkt) back in 2015, which saw Sterling go from an Anfield star to a villain. His departure from Anfield was bad-tempered, with the England international opting to reject the Reds’ offer of a new contract before misleading fans with some of his comments prior to his departure.
Although, his rise in form this season is crushing the dreams of Liverpool fans as his goals and creativity in the final third has helped Manchester City climb above the Reds. Indeed, fans would dislike the attacker even more if he manages to get the job done for City this season, but there’s still a way to go yet.
Liverpool fans – surely Raheem Sterling winning City the title would be the worst-case scenario?
