New Stoke City boss Paul Lambert watched from the stands on Monday evening as his Potters side were ruthlessly dispatched by Manchester United at Old Trafford, and the former Norwich City and Aston Villa boss will know he has a huge task on his hands in keeping the club in the Premier League.
Stoke fans here in The Transfer Tavern are largely uninspired by the Scot’s appointment but keen to get behind their new leader, and told our landlord over a pint that they hoped funds would be available this month for Lambert to make his own mark on the squad. Fans’ hopes look set to become a reality, with The Mirror reporting that Lambert will meet with the club’s owners to discuss transfer targets, and a transfer war chest figure set to be revealed to the new man. The Mirror reports that Stoke are unlikely to break the bank this month, but money will certainly be made available.
Stoke cut back on recruitment last season as the club spend money on improving facilities at The Bet 365 Stadium, with owner Peter Coates keen to now invest money into the squad.
Landlord’s Verdict: Stoke must spend money this month if they are to have any chance of securing their Premier League survival, and fans will be relieved to hear that the Coates family are willing to stump up cash this month.
Lambert needs to be provided with the required resources to achieve his goals for the season, but the pressure will be firmly on the new boss to succeed if money is spent.
