Everton fans are looking ever so slightly disappointed here in the Football Transfer Tavern as Metro claim the Toffees are set to miss out on a Chelsea attacker.
After landing Romelu Lukaku for a club record £28 million fee, Roberto Martinez was hopeful that he could also land Christian Atsu on loan from the Blues to add to his attacking options following the loan return of Gerard Deulofeu.
However after becoming concerned over the amount of playing time that would be afforded to the 22-year-old, Jose Mourinho and Chelsea have decided that a loan switch to Merseyside is not a viable option for the Ghanaian international winger.
Mourinho wanted a clause inserted into the loan agreement that allowed the Blues to recall Atsu in January if they felt he was not getting the playing time they needed him to.
Everton reportedly took exception to this, leading to the deal being called off altogether.
As one of our punters notes, the winger will still be sent out on loan, but the former Porto star’s eventual destination now remains unclear.
Chelsea fans. Do you see a future for Atsu in a Blues shirt or will he just join the rather large scrapheap of players who have failed to make the grade? Let us know your thoughts below.
