Proposed takeover set to prompt Benitez into launching key January moves

Newcastle United supporters have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing the Magpies go down 1-0 at home to Everton in the Premier League on Wednesday night, thus suffering a seventh defeat in eight games.

Rafa Benitez’s men made a fine start to life back in the top tier by winning four of their opening nine matches, but they have since seriously struggled and as such have plummeted towards the wrong end of the division. And their woeful run continued at St James’ Park on Wednesday as a Wayne Rooney strike midway through the first half was enough to secure a 1-0 success for Sam Allardyce’s Toffees in the North East, a result which kept them in tenth place in the table, while the Magpies remain 16th but fell to within a point of the bottom three.

Consequently, there have been many downbeat Newcastle fans in the Tavern in recent times, yet their mood could be improved if a recent report from The Daily Star is anything to go by, which suggests that the proposed takeover deal could instigate January moves for Liverpool’s Danny Ings and Manchester United’s Luke Shaw.

25-year-old Ings has struggled with injury ever since moving to Anfield back in 2015 but has stepped up his recovery with minutes for the club’s Under-23 team this season, yet doesn’t look like breaking into Jurgen Klopp’s first team anytime soon given the plethora of attacking talent at the German’s disposal.

While England international Shaw has had a hard time at Old Trafford under current boss Jose Mourinho, although he did get a start and perform well in their 1-0 success over Bournemouth on Wednesday night, but whether that will be enough to see him earn more regular football is unknown.

And with a takeover of Newcastle reportedly edging ever closer, recent reports suggest that Benitez could look to use that greater financial power to lure both Ings and Shaw to St James’ Park, as the Magpies seek to bolster their ranks ahead of the second half of the season.

But whether they can indeed get a deal done for the duo remains to be seen.

Landlord’s verdict: Takeover talk regarding Newcastle United went a bit quiet last week, but things appear to be motoring towards a conclusion if recent reports are anything to by.

Amanda Staveley’s PCP Capital Partners are reportedly close to sealing a deal for the North East giants, which looks set to give manager Rafa Benitez the funds he needs in January to steer the Magpies away from the Premier League’s bottom three.

And two men he reportedly wants at St James’ Park are Danny Ings and Luke Shaw, both of whom would certainly bolster their ranks, and could ultimately prove to be the difference between them staying up and going down.
